A wind warning remains in place this morning as Storm Abigail sweeps the country.

The yellow weather alert will remain in place until at least 9pm tonight with winds expected to reach 90 kilometres per hour in some parts.

Yesterday some flights leaving Dublin Airport were cancelled as a result of the strong winds and some ferries were also affected.

Meteorologist with Met Éireann Siobhan Ryan said: "The Storm Abigail is pulling away north-northeastwards (and) things will improve somewhat."

However she added the airflow feeding down across the country was still very unstable and will drag down heavy, squally showeers across the country, with the yellow wind warning necessarily staying in place for the whole country.

It will be cooler than recently too, with temperatures of 7C-10C, but feeling colder because of wind chill.

The specifics of the warning are: "Southwest winds veering westerly on Friday morning, with mean speeds of 40 to 55 km/h, will gust 75 to 100 km/h."

Met Éireann explained that yellow level weather alerts are for weather conditions that do not pose an immediate threat to the general population, but only to those exposed to risk by nature of their location and/or activity.

Meanwhile Storm Abigail is causing major disruption in the UK, with power cuts and school closures as gale force winds batter the country.

Scotland has been worst hit by the strong gusts, but the rest of the UK can expect heavy, thundery showers throughout the day as a result of the Britain’s first named storm.
