Wexford man dies following Australia stabbing

An Irish man has died in hospital in Australia from wounds sustained in a stabbing attack.

Wexford native Kenny Meyler, 21, was stabbed in the neck last Sunday at a house in the coastal suburb of Scarborough in Perth.

Mr Meyler died at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth shortly after midnight local time (4pm yesterday Irish time).

The Department of Foreign Affairs is currently providing consular assistance to his mother Melanie and two other relatives who arrived in Perth last Tuesday.

Mr Meyler was from a well-known family in Wexford town, where his mother is a drama teacher.

A 32-year-old man has been charged with intent to do grievous bodily harm over the stabbing of Mr Meyler, a former pupil of CBS Secondary School in Wexford.

The Irish Echo newspaper in Australia has identified the man charged as Irish national Vincent Martin Crowe.

A police spokesperson told the Echo that charges may be upgraded, pending the results of a post mortem.

Mr Meyler travelled to Australia two years ago and his grandfather told the Irish Daily Star that he had been due to return home to Ireland this May.

Police in Perth said they had received reports last Sunday of three to four men fighting at around 2 pm.

Inspector David Picton-King said Mr. Meyler was kicked, punched and stabbed during the frenzied attack, according to the Wexford Echo.

Local media said another man had a bottle smashed over his head during the fight.

Insp. Picton-King said the men had been drinking and that there were several witnesses, the Echo reported.
