We're all facing a wet and stormy weekend, with the bad weather possibly lasting into next week.

Local authorities are preparing for potential flooding as a result of heavy rain and high tides.

Members of the public are being warned to take care near exposed coastal areas, with the bad weather expected to hit tomorrow.

The stormy conditions could last into the early days of next week.

Met Éireann forecaster Gerry Murphy said a host of factors added up to a gloomy picture for the weekend.

"We've had some very unsettled periods in recent weeks, water tables are high, tides are high, winds are quite strong and there will be heavy rain tomorrow," he said.

"All those factors combined will give the risk of coastal flooding in places."
