People living on islands off the Galway, Mayo and Donegal coasts will cast their vote in the Local and European Elections today.

Voting begins for island residents

People living on islands off the Galway, Mayo and Donegal coasts will cast their vote in the Local and European Elections today.

More than 2,100 people are registered to vote on 12 different islands.

The largest electorate is in Galway West, with 1,180 people registered.

An estimated 753 people are entitled to cast their ballot off Donegal's five islands, while 191 people living on Clare Island, Inishbiggle and Inishturk off Mayo are also registered to have their say.

Those on the Supplementary Register are not included in the numbers.

Voting also gets underway in the European elections today with people in the UK and the Netherlands going to the polls.
