A Coast Guard team has rescued a puppy who got trapped on the side of a cliff on Howth Head in Dublin today.

The one-year-old springer spaniel pup called Trixie fell onto a narrow ledge, just inches from a steep drop.

A rescue climber was lowered to save the dog.

A Coast Guard spokesperson said: "Trixie had some initial concerns over who this new arrival, dressed in bright clothing and a white helmet, was joining her on the ledge. After some gentle talking to an apprehensive Trixie by Blandford, the skilled canine negotiator, with promises of doggy treats below she slowly warmed up to her new friend.

"Trixie was then brought into the comfort of the Coast Guard “Doggy Bag”, a very low technical device to stop the dog and rescuer from getting too close on the descent."

The puppy was reunited with her owner and is said to be fine after the ordeal.
