The Agriculture Minister has said the Universal Social Charge is an "unfair tax" that needs to be abolished.
Simon Coveney has said the emergency tax was brought in to deal with a massive hole in the country's finances caused by the previous government.
The minister also accused Fianna Fáil of trying to re-write history and the decisions they made prior to 2011.
Simon Coveney defended the scrapping of the USC, as the economy has been restructured since the days of Fianna Fail: “More than 25% of the entire tax take under Fianna Fáil came from construction.
“We are not going to allow that to happen again.
“In fact construction isn’t even growing at the rate it needs to grow at yet, and actually we are going to see a whole new boost to economic recovery over the next two or three years as construction gets back up to where it needs to be, which is about 25,000-30,000 houses a year.”
