Update: 1.26pm: The three women who died in the crash in Co Limerick have been named locally.

They died after a two-car collision on the N69 just outside Loughill village yesterday evening.

The driver and only person in one of the cars has been named locally as Mary Bradley, from Pallaskenry, Co Limerick.

The driver of the second car was Mary Noonan, she was a sister of former Minister for Finance Michael Noonan.

She was from the Foynes area, but living in Loghill, Co Limerick, as was the front-seat passenger in the car who died - her friend, Mary Costello.

The injured woman was a back-seat passenger in the second car and she has been named locally as Mary Griffin. She is being treated at University Hospital Limerick for injuries described as non-life threatening.

All three women in this car were going to the Listowel Writers' Week literary festival in Co. Kerry.

Earlier: Investigation underway after three women in their 70s die in Limerick collision

An investigation is underway after three women in their 70s were killed in a collision in Co Limerick.

Another elderly woman was seriously injured in the incident.

This two-car collision happened on the N69 just outside Loughill village on the Listowel side at around 6.30pm yesterday evening.

A woman in her 70s who was driving one of the cars was pronounced dead at the scene. She was the only person in the car.

Two women who were in the second car, also in their 70s - the driver and a passenger - were also killed in the collision.

A third woman in the second car is being treated in University Hospital Limerick this morning for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
