A 10-year-old girl and three women have been killed in a car crash in Co Westmeath.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the crash that happened near Mullingar shortly before 8am today on the N4 Dublin Sligo Road, at Port na Shangan just north of Mullingar.
The three women, aged in their late 30s and early 40s, and the girl were killed when the car they were travelling in crashed into a jeep.
The 50-year-old male driver and sole occupant of the jeep was taken to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The section of the N4 road is currently closed while gardaí carry out a technical examination of the scene. Diversions are in place.
Investigating Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have observed a gold coloured Nissan Almera (03 registered) or a black Kia Sorento jeep (06 registered) travelling on the Mullingar - Edgeworthstown stretch of the N4 between 7am and 7.45am this morning to contact them.
