The Irish Universities Association has been outlining its case for the reintroduction of third-level college fees before the Oireachtas education committee today.

The association says state funding per student decreased by 17% in real terms between 2001 and 2006.

It says UCC currently has a deficit of €13m, while the University of Limerick has a cumulative deficit of €6m.

The Irish Universities Association is proposing a new system whereby colleges would be jointly funded by the taxpayer and fees levied on students.
