Unions to hold 'major demonstrations' next February

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has endorsed a proposal to hold a series of "major demonstrations" next February, to demand a restructuring of Ireland’s debt.

Congress said that demonstrations will be held on February 9 in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Sligo, Limerick and Waterford.

They are being timed to coincide with EU Council of Ministers’ meetings being held here, under our Presidency of the EU in 2013.

ICTU said that they want to highlight the transfer of debt from banks, to the Irish people.

General Secretary of ICTU David Begg said that the debt is unsustainable, and we cannot keep trying to cut our way out of the recession.

"The fact of the matter is that this burden is being carried by you and me, and by the next several generations of people and we can't live with that, and that's the reality of it," he said.

"Five years in to the programme of adjustment, we've managed to take €28bn out of the economy, to reduce the deficit by 2%, which is not a great achievement."
