Two patients at a Roscommon nursing home have died following an outbreak of seasonal flu.

The Health Service Executive has confirmed that 42 of the 76 residents at Drumderrig Nursing Home in Boyle have been affected by an outbreak of influenza A-H3.

This is the same strain that claimed six lives in less than a fortnight at a Donegal nursing home in March and April.

While there have been no new cases since last Thursday, April 26, the privately-run nursing home has ceased admissions temporarily and visitor restrictions also apply.

The HSE said the recommended infection control measures have been put in place by the private nursing home, which is providing full assistance to the relevant authorities.
