Trócaire to challenge ban on advertisements

The Trócaire charity says it plans to lodge a submission with the Broadcasting Commission today challenging a ban on ads for its annual Lenten campaign.

The BCI ordered independent broadcasters to pull the TV and radio ads yesterday due to concerns that they breach regulations on political content.

BCI rules say adverts cannot have a political motive.

The Trócaire ads are understood to have been pulled because the Lenten campaign includes a petition on the charity's website urging the Government to implementation a UN resolution on gender inequality.

Trócaire has severely criticised the BCI actions, accusing the commission of adopting an extremely narrow interpretation of the regulations.
