Trinity scientists make major breakthrough into disorder

There has been a significant breakthrough in research into schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Scientists at Trinity College Dublin examined blood samples from more than 1,500 Irish people with schizophrenia and 1,700 without, to look for small structural variations.

They identified five patients where part of a gene was duplicated.

This gives scientists a strong biological clue as to one of the potential risks for these common disorders.
