Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams and Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble are meeting in Stormont this afternoon to discuss ways to overcome the current crisis in the Irish peace process.
Sinn Fein has said it will be pressing Mr Trimble for evidence of his intent to support the political process and the institutions established under the Good Friday Agreement.
Mr Trimble, meanwhile, is likely to pressure republicans to help bring about IRA disbandment.
One proposal likely to emerge from today's talks is a series of bilateral meetings between Sinn Fein and the UUP designed to build trust between the two parties.
Elsewhere, Foreign Affairs Minister Brian Cowen and Northern Secretary Paul Murphy are also holding talks with an SDLP delegation in Dublin today.
Among the items on the agenda are how to restore the North's devolved political institutions and whether or not the next Assembly elections will be held as planned in May.
SDLP leader Mark Durkan and deputy leader Brid Rodgers are both attending the talks.
