Transport Minister concerned about spike in number of road deaths

Transport Minister Shane Ross has said he is considering bringing forward a high-level meeting on road safety.

Minister Ross has described the situation as "critical" after an increase in the number of road deaths over the past 10 days.

Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority will launch a campaign later to try and prevent deaths on our roads this Bank Holiday weekend.

Minister Ross said that road safety will have to be stepped up.

"Road deaths are up about, 23, 24% this year," he said.

"It's a product of many factors, but it's not satisfactory.

"We've got a high-level group meeting which includes the top people in my Department, the top people in the Road Safety Authority, the top people in the Gardaí, and others, which is due for next month - and I'm thinking of bringing that forward."
