Tonight's temperatures set to plummet

After weeks of stormy conditions, the first cold snap of the winter is on the way.

Temperatures tonight will fall to as low as minus three degrees in some places.

Icy stretches is expected on untreated roads and John Caulfield of the Road Safety Authority is advising motorists to drive with extreme care:

"Tonight it will be chilly after dark with widespread frost … we're telling people from a Road Safety standpoint to be very careful going on the roads tonight," said John Caulfield of the RSA.

He also warned motorists to be wary of black ice.
