Thundery downpours at least until tomorrow morning
The first bank holiday weekend of the summer is turning out very wet, with heavy rain and thundery downpours forecast for most areas.
A status yellow weather warning is in place with accumulations of 30mm of rain expected, particularly in the west and north.
There will be very little let-up, with Met Éireann warning that it will be into the early hours of tomorrow morning before the heavy showers begin to clear.
Meteorologist Deirdre Lowe said today in particular will be a bit of a washout.
"Today's the worst day of the bank holiday, weather-wise," she confirmed, warning of some localised flooding.
It will be mild tomorrow, with temperatures getting up to 12C and 16C in places.
The weather has caused the postponement of some events, including today’s Fires Festival at Uisneach in Co Westmeath, which was due to kick off at 2pm.
That festival will take place next week instead.
David Clarke, owner of the site on which the festival was to take place said: "Everything will go ahead, as planned for today, on May 9."
The headline act was Galway chanteuse Mary Coughlan, and the climax of the festival was to be the lighting of the festival fire, at the summit of the hill, at 9pm.
The decision to postpone the event was made earliler this morning on the recommendation of the health and safety officer, said Mr Clarke.
