A three-year-old boy has died in a two car collision in Co Monaghan.

A three-year-old boy has died in a two car collision in Co Monaghan.

It happened at Annamarron on the main N2 Dublin to Derry Road at around 6.30pm.

A 36-year-old woman who was driving the car was critically injured and flown by air ambulance to Tallaght Hospital.

Two women in the second car were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and are anxious to speak to a lorry driver who stopped at the scene of the collision.

The road is being forensically examined and is likely to remain closed overnight.
