Detectives are hunting for three men suspected of stabbing a father-of-one to death.

Detectives are hunting for three men suspected of stabbing a father-of-one to death.

The victim, named locally as Gerard Burnett, was knifed more than 10 times on the doorstep of the house he shared with his girlfriend.

Gardaí said three men knocked on his front door, and carried out the frenzied assault when he opened it.

The violent attack happened in Castlecurragh Vale, Mulhuddart, Co Dublin, just before midnight last night.

It is understood the victim’s partner was in the house at the time and ran out to the back garden in distress, carrying their young child.

“We are looking to identify these people,” said a Garda spokesman.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the vicinity to come forward.”

Mr Burnett, who had several previous criminal convictions, was known to gardaí, but investigators have not yet established a motive for the attack.

He was originally from the nearby Drumheath area and recently moved to the estate.

He was rushed to the James Connolly Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead within an hour.

Meanwhile, a 47-year-old man remains in custody after the body of a woman was found at a house.

The victim, also 47, was found dead at a home in Lacken View in Naas, Co Kildare, on Sunday.

She has been named locally as mother-of-four Elizabeth Duff.

The arrest was made yesterday following a post-mortem examination, but a Garda spokesman said the details of cause of death would not be revealed for operational reasons.

The man was being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act in Naas Garda Station.

Separately, a woman arrested over the murder of an elderly man she knew was released without charge last night.

The 50-year-old woman, detained after Walter Plunkett was found dead in the garden of his Co Wexford home, was freed after being questioned for more than a day.

She was also psychologically assessed while in custody.

A Garda spokesman said a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr Plunkett, 84, from Ballyedmond, Monamolin, died on Sunday.

A post-mortem examination showed that he was asphyxiated.
