Three candidates have been elected to the newly reformed Monaghan County Council.

Voters returned to the polls yesterday after the election was called off last month due to the sudden death of a candidate.

Following the first count, the quota was set at 1,271. Fianna Fáil's Seamus Coyle topped the poll with 1,449, followed by Ciara McPhillips of Fine Gael on 1,348, and Cathy Bennett of Sinn Féin on 1, 295.

Three other candidates are close to reaching the quota.
