A small village in Co Wicklow is set to be a poster-free zone in the build up to the General Election after 15 candidates in the constituency have agreed not to erect posters in the village.

Glenealy, which is west of Wicklow Town, last month declared itself a poster-free zone.

It now it looks likely that no posters will be erected in the village after all the candidates, which include sitting TDs Simon Harris, Ann Ferris and Stephen Donnolly, agreed to a request from the local Tidy Towns Committee.

Speaking this evening, Ronan Mullen, spokesperson for the Committee, said that they were delighted with the response they had gotten from the prospective candidates.

“We very much appreciate that they have taken the time to engage with us and that they have clearly shown their commitment to the residents of Glenealy," he said.

“We would encourage other Tidy Towns Committees around the country to cease the opportunity and declare their village a Poster Free Zone."

By law, election posters are not supposed to be erected until after the election is called, but there have been reports of some posters being displayed prematurely.
