A 15-year-old boy died last night following a boating accident off the coast of Co Derry.

The teenager, who was from Coleraine, was swept out to sea yesterday afternoon after he and a friend got into difficulties in a dinghy close to Castlerock at around 3pm.

His friend managed to swim to safety and raise the alarm, sparking a major air and sea search.

The 15-year-old was subsequently located by the PSNI helicopter and rescued from the water, but he died a short time later in hospital.
