Teenager dies after taking substance at Cork Indiependence festival

A young man who was taken to Cork University Hospital after consuming a substance at the Indiependence Music Festival has died.

The 19-year-old has been named as Jack Downey from Clonmel, Co Tipperary.

He presented to the medical staff at the festival in Mitchelstown, Co Cork, before being transferred to the CUH.

A special Mass is being held for Jack in Clonmel this evening.

The Mayor of Clonmel paid tribute to Jack saying the "area is in shock".

Mayor Garret Ahern said: "Jack was a lovely 19-year-old, a young boy who had a future ahead of him.

"It's a really sad time for his parents. Everyone had high hopes that things would improve over the weekend when we heard the sad news but unfortunately that hasn't happened.

"I think everybody wants to lend their support to the family on this really tragic occasion."

Indiependence organisers offered their "immediate thoughts and those of all the festival-goers" to the "family, relatives and friends" of Jack.

They added: "As with all sudden deaths, And Garda Siochána are investigating any pre-existing medical conditions and the circumstances surrounding the matter."

An Indiependence festival spokesperson previously confirmed over the weekend they were aware of the matter.

"Chief Medical Officer William Wade has confirmed that on Friday evening a 19-year-old male was transferred to CUH having received treatment from the onsite doctor, he remains in CUH where his condition is being monitored. We have no further information at this time," the spokesman said.

The music festival is in its 10th year at Deer Farm, Mitchelstown and INDIE19 was the biggest event to date, with almost 15,000 people attending. Headliners included Bastille, Biffy Clyro, Lewis Capaldi and Gavin James.
