Teachers warn govt they 'are taking the necessary steps'

Ireland's main teaching unions have issued a stark warning for the government ahead of a vote on industrial action.

The INTO, ASTI and the TUI is warning against any unilateral introduction of pay cuts and changes to working hours.

All three unions are united in their opposition to the proposals and say the won't be ruling out strike action when members are balloted next month.

John MacGabhann, general secretary of the Teachers Union of Ireland, says the ball is now in the government's court: "It is a matter that government will determine. We are taking the necessary preparation steps at the possibility of the government acting foolishly or imprudently at this point."
