Ireland's TDs have given back almost €140,000 in allowances they did not use.

Ireland's TDs have given back almost €140,000 in allowances they did not use.

The money has been returned by 56 deputies who did not use the entire amount given to them.

Former education minister Ruairi Quinn returned the highest amount, giving back more than €15,000, while junior minister Jimmy Deenihan returned €3.63.

TDs received a total of €6.2m last year in travel and office allowances.
