An Independent Deputy is calling for more social housing to be built across the country as a solution to the growing shortage.

An Independent Deputy is calling for more social housing to be built across the country as a solution to the growing shortage.

90,000 people across the country are currently waiting on social housing, while Government spends up to €600m each year on Rent Allowance.

People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett will join protesters for a demonstration at the NAMA-owned site of the former Deerhunter pub in Sallynoggin this afternoon.

4,000 people are on the waiting list in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown area in Dublin.

Deputy Boyd Barrett claims the Deerhunter site would be perfect for social housing.

"There's no planning restrictions on having social or affordable housing on this site," he said.

"The problem is will on behalf of the Government and NAMA to open these sites up and use them to provide social and affordable housing - when there's an absolute crying need for it all over the city."

Boyd Barrett said other similar sites included Cherrywood, The Cottage Homes, Abbeyview House, and Church Road.
