Taxi drivers are set to get a €20m compensation package following the Government's decision to deregulate the industry, according to reports this morning.
Around 2,000 people sought compensation after the Government decided to abolish limits on the numbers of taxis and significantly devalued lucrative taxi plates which had cost their owners up to €80,000.
The Government established a taxi hardship panel to assess the compensation claims and this body is expected to propose that widows and ill people who suffered financially because of deregulation should get the bulk of any pay-outs.
People who owned multiple taxi plates and operated cosy arrangements, where others drove the cabs, will reportedly get nothing.
