The Taoiseach has said he will act on serious allegations of Garda misconduct.

Enda Kenny said documents received from Fianna Fáil's Micheál Martin outline grave allegations of Garda mishandling of a series of criminal cases.

Yesterday Martin passed documents to the Taoiseach that he had been given by the whistleblower Maurice McCabe.

Kenny has promised a full examination, adding he has a "duty" to do so, and that he will deal with it in the "interest of our state, our country and our people".

Earlier in the Dáil the Fianna Fáil leader stressed the allegations had been raised with the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter two years ago, but the minister had failed to act.

Martin added the Justice Minister's position is not tenable.
