The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has phoned the UK Prime Minister David Cameron to congratulate him on his re-election.
David Cameron and the Conservatives victory in Thursday’s general lection confirmed what has beamed feared for some time, that Britain will hold a referendum on its EU membership.
If the UK was to leave in 2017 - when the Cameron intends to hold the vote - it would be a huge blow to Irish business; with about €1bn in trade between the two countries every week potentially put under a new system of tariffs and regulation.
It could also lead to a return of passport checks along the border with the North.
The Taoiseach and the UK Prime Minister will meet for talks to discuss the EU and the drive for reform which might keep the UK within Europe.
Kenny also congratulated Mr Cameron on a “stunning victory” and said he looks forward to continuing their close working-relationship for the benefit of Ireland and the United Kingdom.
