The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has denied that Ireland is a hostile place for immigrants.

Speaking three days ahead of the citizenship referendum, Mr Ahern said he had no doubt voting "Yes" was the right option.

“This year, we have almost 50,000 people on work permits, we’re the only country in the European Union from May 1 that opened ourselves up,” he said.

“Nobody can make the accusation that we are unfair, uncharitable, unkind, unhuman. We have the most liberal laws, so what we’re doing is modest, is absolutely necessary and I urge people to support it.”
