The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has vowed to push for a speedy return to power-sharing in the North if the Independent Monitoring Commission reports a complete end to IRA activity.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has vowed to push for a speedy return to power-sharing in the North if the Independent Monitoring Commission reports a complete end to IRA activity.

The body - set up to monitor paramilitary ceasefires - is due to issue its latest report at the end of January.

Speaking to the BBC today, Mr Ahern said he was hoping for an early restoration of the power-sharing institutions if the IMC says the IRA has honoured its promise to end all illegal activity.
