Tánaiste hoping to convince German leader to support debt deal

It is hoped Ireland can garner further support for its bid on a deal on the issue of Anglo Irish Bank promissory notes today.

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore is meeting with Germany's opposition leader in Dublin where a discussion will take place on Ireland's debt.

Social Democrats party leader Peer Steinbruck is challenging Chancellor Angela Merkel in this year's German elections.

A €3.1bn repayment is due by the end of next month and Germany has been seen as a key opponent to any deal for Ireland on the issue.

Other issues up for discussion will include Ireland's EU Presidency and the European budget.
