Tánaiste expecting defeat in Presidential Age Referendum

Tánaiste Joan Burton has admitted that she expects the referendum on reducing the age of presidential candidates to be defeated.

On Friday, voters will be asked to vote on whether to reduce the age requirement at which someone can run for the highest office in the state from 35 to 21 years of age.

Opinion polls suggest this referendum is to be heavily defeated.

Joan Burton admitted in an interview with Shane Coleman that this is what she is expecting.

"On balance, I will vote Yes," she said.

"A lot of people have said to me that they've thought about it, and I've thought about it myself, because it was a recommendation directly by the [Constitutional] Convention.

"If you think about it, somebody who's 21 can be a TD, they can therefore be Taoiseach."

When asked if she think the referendum will be defeated, she indicated that she did, saying: "Well, from the conversations I've heard - but we have said to people to make up their minds."
