Survey highlights lack of awareness about pension changes

A new survey has indicated a lack of awareness among the Irish public about the Government's National Pension Framework.

A new survey has indicated a lack of awareness among the Irish public about the Government's National Pension Framework.

Some 71% of those questioned for the survey from Bank of Ireland Life are not aware of the proposals.

Less than half, 48%, understand the impact of the proposals on their retirement plans.

Some 51% of employees worry about their retirement, with a majority concerned they will not have enough savings or income to live on.

"With 81% of employees surveyed not seeking pension advice for a year or more, there is clearly an increased need for people to speak to a pension expert in order to maximise the current tax relief regime," said Bernard Walsh, Head of Pensions, Bank of Ireland Life.

“The proposed changes to the pensions landscape will impact on everyone who has an income.

"However, it’s never too late to take steps to ensure that you have a comfortable retirement and the lifestyle you deserve at the end of your working life. People need expert help to navigate their way through these changes and to agree a comprehensive plan."
