Survey finds Catholic schools want communion preparations done outside classroom

Catholic schools want key preparations for sacraments such as confirmation and communion to take place outside the classroom.

That is one of the findings of a survey by the Archdiocese of Dublin.

The survey also found that there is a demand for parents and local parishes to play a greater role in preparing children for sacraments.

The Archdiocese of Dublin covers the capital and Wicklow, as well as parts of Kildare, Carlow, Laois and Wexford.

Laois-based priest, Fr Paddy Byrne, finds Communion Day somewhat stressful.

He said: "I find those big communion days, particularly with the diversity, with the disconnect so many people have from the ritual and to police these occasions, can be quite traumatic almost.

"There seems to be definitely an element of policing, asking people if they would be kind enough for 45 minutes to turn off the phone."

In a statement, the sacraments review group established by the archdiocese last September, said: "A strong pattern in the responses was a desire for change being expressed across the board".

It said respondents agreed that passing on the faith was "primarily the responsibility of the home, with the support of the parish as well as the school".

Those involved with schools told the archdiocese they felt they were "working in a vacuum".
