Thousands of students are taking part in a protest march in Dublin to oppose plans to hike third-level fees.

The Union of Students in Ireland estimates up to 25,000 people are taking part in the protest, which is moving from Parnell Square to Government Buildings on Merrion Street.

It is understood the Government is considering a doubling of registration charges to €3,000 from next September.

The Taoiseach, the Tánaiste and Education Minister are both giving strong indications the fees will be increased in the Budget.
