The State is reportedly facing a potential €200m increase in pension payouts as a result of a discrimination case from the National Women's Council.

Reports this morning say the council is threatening to take court action in Ireland and Europe over the lingering effects of the old civil service marriage ban.

Up until 1973, women were forced to resign from the civil service when they got married so they could concentrate on bringing up a family.

As a result of this, more than 150,000 women still do not get the full old-age pension because they didn't pay enough PRSI during their working lives.
