State 'covering up' real cost of nursing home care: Nursing Homes Ireland

The body which represents nursing homes across the country is urging the Minister for Health to publish up-to-date details on the cost of care in Ireland.

Nursing Homes Ireland is accusing the Government of covering up the real cost involved for people who avail of the Fair Deal scheme.

The organisation said the details were last released four years ago (in March 2011) and families are now being forced to make uninformed decisions.

It follows concerns which have been raised over the length of time it takes for Fair Deal scheme applications to be approved.

CEO of NHI Tadhg Daly said Leo Vardakar must address the issues involving Fair Deal.

"It's up to the Minister to impress on the HSE (who) we would argue are conflicted on this occasion - they are administrators of the scheme, but they are also the care providers," he said.

"We are accusing the State of a cover-up on this occasion.

"It's important the Minister would issue an instruction to the HSE to update the list (of costs), publish the list and make sure it's available to the public."
