A 47-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being charged with assault in connection with the death of his father in Dublin on Friday.

Anthony Tims, 74, was found after gardaí in Ronanstown were called to a house at Rowlagh Green, Clondalkin at 8.45pm.

He had been celebrating his 74th birthday earlier that day.

The pensioner was discovered with serious injuries and rushed to Tallaght Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Gardaí made an arrest on Saturday.

Mark Tims, who also has the same family home address at Rowlagh Green, appeared before Judge Dermot Simms this evening charged with assault causing harm to Anthony Tims on July 13, 2018.

Garda Sergeant John Conway told Dublin District Court that the man was arrested for the purpose of being charged at Lucan Garda station on Monday at 2.21pm and at just after 4pm he was charged.

He was cautioned that he was not obliged to say anything and that anything he said would be taken down and used in evidence after which “he had no reply”, Garda Sergeant Conway said.

The accused, who was wearing a grey hooded top, black tracksuit bottoms and runners, did not address the court during the brief hearing.

There was no application for bail, said defence solicitor Danica Kinane.

Judge Simms remanded Mr Tims in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Friday.

The judge granted legal aid and acceded to a request from his solicitor to direct that he was to receive necessary medical treatment in custody.
