Sinn Féin housing spokesperson outlines what is needed to tackle housing crisis
Increased investment in affordable homes and a strengthening of current legislation is needed if the housing crisis is to be tackled effectively.
That is the view of Sinn Féin's housing spokesperson after news the country's biggest landlord has doubled its profits in the first six months of the year.
Rents at I-RES properties average at €1,500 a month.
According to Deputy Eoin O'Broin, it is a feature of a rental market that is out of control.
He outlined a number of things that need to happen.
He said: "The first is to start to invest in the delivery of a significant supply of affordable purchase homes on local land, lead by the authorities.
"The second is to strengthen rent legislation so that first of all it is policed by the local authorities and the Residential Tenancies Board, and second rent increases are linked to the Retail Price Index, and not, as is currently the case, a 12.5% increase over the past three years."
