Shatter to face Dáil grilling on Garda misconduct claims

TDs will be given the opportunity to quiz the Justice Minister today on allegations of Garda misconduct.

Minister Alan Shatter received the claims two years ago and has been accused by the opposition of doing nothing about them. He is however today expected to outline how he passed them onto the Garda Commissioner for examination.

Last night Minister Shatter said he would be "setting the record straight" during today's proceedings in the Dail, which spend about five and half hours listening to statements.

However Fianna Fáil's Justice spokesman Niall Collins thinks this issue is becoming too big a problem for the Government - and that the only solution is for the minister to resign his position.

"The Government has basically a very large political problem manifesting itself in Alan Shatter," Deputy Collins said.

"We've had so many incidents around Alan Shatter during his tenure now as Minister for Justice… I think now it would clear the air if Minister Shatter was to leave the stage in that capacity at this point in time."

Meanwhile the Government is today expected to announce the terms of reference for the inquiry by Senior Counsel, Seán Guerin.
