Senator calls on Government to electronically tag criminals

The Government has being urged to implement laws to allow for tagging of criminals.

Senator Mark Daly has said Section 21 of the Criminal Justice allows for those convicted of serious offences to be tagged electronically upon release from prison.

The Fianna Fáil politician believes it would help clamp down on repeat offending and save taxpayers money.

Senator Daly has said it is a simple change to make and is calling on the coalition to take action on it immediately.

“What the numbers show us is 62% of people who are early released from prison go on to reoffend,” said Senator Daly.

“80% of them do it in the first year after being released from jail. So if they were smart tagged they would know that the Gardaí would be aware of their location at all times and therefore would be very unlikely to reoffend.”
