Senator brings forward 'right to romance' bill for people with intellectual disabilities

Changes are proposed to sexual offences legislation, to eliminate discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities.

Senator Katherine Zappone is formally launching her Criminal Law Sexual Offences Amendment Bill on the same day it goes before the Seanad for second stage debate.

Senator Zappone's legislation repeals the law that criminalises the sexual activity of people with intellectual disabilities, unless they are married to each other.

She said: "The bill could as well be called 'The right to romance' or 'the right to relationships' for people with intellectual disabilities."
