A security alert is underway in south Belfast after a suspicious device was discovered on Donegall Avenue.

Homes have been evacuated in the area and the railway line has been closed between Great Victoria Street Station and Adelaide halt, as a precaution.

The British Army bomb squad is currently at the scene.

It comes as political leaders in the North are appealing for calm after further violent protests in Co. Antrim overnight led to four police officers becoming injured.

One officer needed hospital treatment as loyalists protesting against the decision to limit the flying of the Union flag at Belfast City Hall, threw petrol bombs, bricks and fireworks at police.

Two people were arrested last night during the trouble.
