Several children were injured today when a school bus crashed on a notorious stretch of road.

The vehicle was involved in an accident on the Killyleagh Road near Downpatrick, Co Down.

A police spokesman said a number of children suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital by passing motorists.

It is understood no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Amid thick fog, the bus had gone into a verge in the road close to the Quoile Bridge.

Police estimated between 30 to 40 pupils were taken to hospital, with one reported to have suffered a broken arm.
