Savita inquest to conclude

The inquest into the death of Indian dentist Savita Halappanavar is expected to conclude today.

The 31-year-old died from septic shock at Galway University Hospital on October 28 last following a miscarriage.

She requested an abortion but was told this was not possible under Irish law.

The inquest will hear from Coroner Dr Ciaran MacLoughlin this morning.

He is expected to sum up the last seven days of evidence for the jury.

He will also charge them as to what verdicts they may return and what recommendations they may tag on to their findings.

Before the jury retires, it is open to the legal teams representing Savita's husband Praveen Halappanavar, Galway University Hospital and Consultant Obstetrician Dr Katherine Astbury to make submissions to the Coroner.

If they choose to do that, the submissions will be made in the absence of the jury.
