Sandycove Bathers Association to allow women members

Dublin's Sandycove Bathers Association is allowing women to become members for the first time.

Councillors called for the Government to review the operating licence for the club last October. Now, the swimming club has agreed to accept women members at the 40 foot.

Until the 70s, the 40 foot was a male-only swimming area. From the 70s, women could swim there, but two huts owned by the association - one for changing and one with kitchen facilities - were not available to them.

Following a recent meeting the club has decided that woman can become full members this year.

The change was precipitated by low-level campaigning and a new bathing shelter erected by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Co Council.
