The operation of a ’family hub’ by a private company is being likened to Direct Provision for homeless people.

Lynam’s Hotel is reopening on Dublin’s O’Connell Street next week as one of the Government’s hubs, which gives homeless families their own kitchen and laundry facilities.

However it will be operated by a private firm rather than Dublin City Council.

Chair of Housing Committee, Daithi Doolan, thinks charities like The Peter McVerry Trust should be given those roles instead.

"That’s a blot in our copybook, Direct Provision," he said.

"I absolutely oppose it. I think it’s dehumanising and I think if we’re using this we’re moving towards the same sort of direction with homelessness it’s a sorry state."
