Road users advised to take care as wintry conditions take hold

Wintry weather is affecting road conditions around the country, with further snow showers forecast.

Met Éireann has warned of falling temperatures over the next few days after some sleet and snow showers earlier.

There will be further wintry showers tonight amd in the coming days. Tonight, these will be heaviest and most frequent in the west and north with isolated thunderstorms.

Temperatures will be 0C to 3C with frost and icy stretches.

A yellow weather warning has also been issued for heavy rain until 9pm tonight in Mayo, Galway and Donegal.

The AA's Adrian Harmon is advising road users to be prepared.

He said: "Met Éireann has forecast a drop in termperatures over the coming days. Widespread frost and ice is likely.

"At the moment we are experiencing intermittent sleet and snow showers around the country, particularly in parts of the Midlands. This can lead to reduced visibility and slippery surfaces.

"Bear that in mind if you're on the roads today."

The weekend is looking cold - very cold at nighttime - but it will at least be dry.
