A group of Irish researchers has said that they're confident of identifying new ways of curbing the problem of MRSA infections.

Their project - which is being funded by the Health Research Board - is a world first.

The group of experts are researching screening and detection as a means of stopping the spread of MRSA among patients.

The team will also examine the use of gas to kill the bacteria in wards.

Researcher Professor David Coleman said: "We released hydrogen peroxide gas into a small entry ward.

"Two hours later, every single microbe and spore in that ward has been totally destroyed, including bugs that are stuck in cracks in the floor and ceiling and vents and pipes."
